summary

Measurements of PSA concentration in the plasma were made before therapy in 84 patients with prostate carcinoma in various stages of clinical progression, in 97 patients with prostatic adenoma and in a Control group of 33 healthy males. It was found that in patients with prostatic carcinoma the PSA concentration is significantly higher than in healthy males or patients with prostatic adenoma (ex-cluding stage A). The proportions of higher concentrations in patients with prostate carcinoma reveal a clear rising tendency as the disease progresses. The evaluation of PSA concentration in the plasma of patients with prostatic carcinoma may be useful information in diagnozing such patients, particularly in estimating a stage of progression.
