summary

Introduction.
There has been increasing trend of fungal urinary tract infection (UTI) which may constitute 5% of all UTI in recent years. Diabetic, catheterized and immunocompromized patients are especially prone to the fungal infection. Most commonly Candida and particularly C. albicans are found. However, Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis i Trichosporon asahii which were sporadically present in the past are nowadays more frequently shown.
The aim of the study.
The purpose of the study is isolation, identification and determination of drug susceptibility of fungal uropathogens found in urine of hospitalized patients in 2001 and in 2002.
Material and methods.
Urine samples of patients hospitalized in different wards were sent for microbiological examinations. In case of significant funguria, uropathogen was isolated and identified and its drug susceptibility was determined. Uropathogens were identified with the use of automatic system ATB (tests ID 32 C). Fungal drug susceptibility was determined with Fungitest?.
Results.
During 18 months of the study 52 fungal pathogens were found. Funguria was shown in 0,4% of hospitalized patients. More than a half was isolated in patients of transplantological wards (29/52). Among fungal uropathogens Candida sp. (33/52) dominated. There rest belonged to Trichosporon asahii (19/52) and were isolated in patients of transplantological wards (16/19). All Candida uropathogens were susceptible to amphothericin B and fluconazole. T. asahii was specially susceptible to fluconazole (17 sensitive and 2 ? intermediately sensitive).
Conclusions.
Candida genus and Candida species dominated among fungal uropathogens found in hospitalized patients. T. asahii was the cause of funguria mainly in patients of transplantological wards. The fungal uropathogens were most susceptible to fluconazole.
