summary

General screening examination is an effective method limiting incidence and mortality related to the disease they are to discover. As a result of performed for many years screening tests toward carcinoma of the cervix and of the breast mortality from these tumours has diminished. For many years discussions are held concerning the effectiveness of screening tests aiming at an early diagnosis of the prostatic cancer which is an important epidemiological problem. We have to our disposal methods of its early diagnosis as well as the means of its final verification. Criteria of screening studies were approved by WHO in 1968. The present paper gives a review of actual epidemiological situation, risk factors related to the prostatic cancer and the methods of its diagnosis. The authors try to determine whether the proposed screening program regarding this disease fulfils WHO criteria.
