summary

Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess, the penetration of gentamicin
into simple renal cysts. Patients and methods: To address this issue in 20 patients with
simple renal cysts (14 of them had cysts of proximal origin and 6 of undetermined origin)
80 mg of gentamicin was given in single intravenous dosis 40 minutes before cyst punction.
Simultaneously to the cyst punction blood sample was obtained from the cubital vein for
assessment of serum gentamicin concentration. Cyst fluid and serum gentamicin
concentrations were compared.
Results: Serum gentamicin concentration in patients with simple renal cysts of proximal
origin did not differ from the concentration in patients with cysts of undetermined origin
3, 66 ? 2, 27 vs. 5,2 ? 3,46 (?g/ml
proximal cysts was lower than the concentration in cysts of undetermined origin
0,28?0,40 vs. 2,07?l,85 ?g/ml
Conclusion: Results of the present study suggest that the penetration of gentamicin
into proximal tubule-derived cysts is worse than into cysts of undetermined origin.
