external urethral sphincter morphology-ultrastructure-innervation investigational techniques

summary

Innervation of the external urethral sphincter (e. u. s.) is very complex both
from the anatomical and functional point of view. Therefore, they are some
limitations of the investigational techni±ues employed. The abdomina]
approach to the pudendal canal could easy lead to the omitting of the nerves
ramifying very high from the pudendal trunk, or those ramifying directly from
the ventral roots of the spinal cord. The interpretation of the morphological
studies of the e. u. s. region is impossible without a precise investigations of
the structures found in the neighbuorhood of this muscle and without a precise
settlement of the place where terminal ramifications of the nerve branch to the
e. u. s. are entering the muscle.
Proper material selection for both anatomical and morphological studies is
very important. Foetal material is the most appropriate for the anatomical
studies of this subject. For the immunohistochemical studies material most
similar to the human (e.g. pig) should be used, since some pathological states
spinal cord injuries, neoplasms
