urinary tract bacterial infection transurethral instrumentation
summary
- Objective. The aim of the study was to analfze the frequency of urinary
- infections in patients treated in Urological Department between 1994-1995
- years.
- Material and method. The urine cultures were performed in 1817 pts: 1230 men
- and 587 women. The frequency of urinary infections in kidney stone, BPH, bladder
- cancer patients were analized. Bactcriogical urine examinations after transurthral
- procedures were also done.
- Results. The presence of urinary tract infection was found in 24% of patients
- admitted in 1994 and 30% of patients admitted in 1995. The percentage of positivc
- urine cultures in patients with history of transurethral instrumentation was 50%. The
- most frequent isolated pathogens were: E. coli, Proteus, Enterococcus and Pseudo-
- monas. The urinary tract infection was more often obscrvcd in women.
- The U.T.I. was observed in 25% of kidney stone disease in 20% of patients with
- BPH and 27% with bladder cancer. Transurethral procedures predisposed to U.T.I.
- 50% of patients after transurethral instrumentation had positive urine cultures.
- Conclusion. (I) Between 1994-1995 bacterial urinary tract infection was obsc-
- rvcd in 30% of patients treated in Urological Department. (2) Transurethral proce-
- dures enhanced the risk of U.T.I. and thafs why bacterial prophylaxis is recom-
- mended in patients after transurethral instrumentation.
