summary

The objective of the paper is to assess the nephron sparing surgery treatment (NSS) in patients with bilateral asynchronous cancer of kidney.
Material and method. Laboratory and radiological check-ups in 10 patients who had undergone tumor enucleation or partial resection of parenchyma together with tumor of the second kidney on average within 98 months after the nephrectomy of one of the kidneys with carcinoma.
Results. The patients were 6 women and 4 men with an average age of 59,1 years. The observation time after NSS was on average 40,3 months. In 2 patients out of 3 where the death was reported the cause was the local recurrence of the tumor, the average size of the NSS operated tumor was 4,48 cm. Post operative uremia was reported in 5 patients.
Conclusions.
1. The NSS treatment in cases of asynchronous kidney cancer (ARN) appears to be a valuable, although often temporary (due to secondary kidney insufficency) alternative to radical surgical treatment and the resulting dialysis therapy.
2. The size of a tumor over 5 cm in diameter and its multifoeality are negative prognostic factors in patients with ARN post NSS and require a radical operation.
3. Only persistent and systematic monitoring of the second kidney can protect those patients from the necessity of radical surgery with dialysis therapy.
