summary

Purpose. Retroperitoneal videoscopic nephrectomies and nephrouretereclomies have usually been performed in flank position of the patient. There have been some recent publications about operating on patients in a prone position, so we wanted to try this technique. We report our experience of 14 such procedures.
Material and method. Videoscopic retroperitoneal operations have been performed on 89 patients with urinary tract pathology. On 77 patients nephrectomy or nephroureteroctomy was performed, 63 of them in flank position, and 14 in prone position.
Results. None of evaluated patients required conversion to open surgery or blood transfusion. Operations performed in prone position were simplest because of the convenient view of the renal vessels. The time taken for surgery was therefore shorter. Also, the position of the surgeon\'s hands was more comfortable.
Conclusions. Prone position of the patient is convenient for videoscopic retroperitoneal nephpectomy or nephroureterectomy. The visibility of the anatomy of the kidney and renal hilus makes this technique safe for the patient.
