Introduction.

The beginning of medical teaching on the middle level in Danzig (Gdańsk) dates back to the 16th century. In April 1935, on the base of the Municipal Hospital and other Danzig's hospitals the Academy for Practical Medicine was created. In 1940, after organising a new institutes and inviting many professors and lecturers the facility was transformed into real Medical academy (Medizinische Akademie in Danzig, MAD). Professor Heinrich Klose, a surgeon was one of the active founders of the Medical Academy in Danzig.

Objectives.

The aim of the study is to present the work and activity of Professor Klose, well known Danzig's surgeon and scientist.

Material and methods.

Extensive research was undertaken for collection literature and documents in German and Polish archives and libraries to prepare this study.

Results.

Heinrich Klose was outstanding German universal surgeon. In 1924, he began to work as a chief surgeon of the Department of Surgery at Municipal Hospital and from 1935 to 1945 as a head of the surgical clinic in the new created Medical Academy of Danzig.In the last ten years as a head of the clinic he devoted himself to routine clinical activity and espe-cially didactic. He gave lectures, hold the different training course e.g. “Surgery on corps”, “Surgical outpatient clinic and minor surgery”, “Practical course of the urological endosco-pies “ and “Work in surgical laboratory”. Since 1941, he conducted once a week a teaching hour, about “Military- and war surgery” (Wehr- und Kriegschirurgie).

Conclusion.

Professor Klose was universal general surgeon, excellent operatour and teacher. He took particular interest in abdominal surgery, breast and thyroid gland operations. He de-voted himself also to urological surgery, especially kidney operations.
