kidney microbubbles ultrasonography ultrasound contrast agents

summary

Introduction. Ultrasonography is at present the basic examination in diagnostics of urogenital diseases, including kidneys. Although a big progress in technical aspects took place in this method in the last three decades continually there is a need to improve precision of recognition. New ultrasound techniques are to shorten diagnostic algorithm and establishing correct diagnosis during the first examination. One of them is contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS).
The aim of the study. The aim of this study is to demonstrate basic information about structure, principles of work, technical aspects, artifacts and contraindications for use of ultrasound contrast agents (UCA).
Methods. The cited data were obtained from both original and review papers published in the urological and imaging descriptions.
Conclusions. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is a new, valuable technique which can give additional information to conventional, grey-scale examination. Use of microbubbles’ proprieties can provide diagnostic range extension of performed examinations.
