The metabolic activity of neutrophils was investigated in the peripheral blood of 56 patients with prostatic adenoma and 104 patients with prostatic carcinoma. The spontaneous nitroblue tetrazolium reduction test (NBTsp) and the stimulated test (NBTst) were used. In patients with prostatic adenoma the results of both NBT tests may help in demonstration of associated infections and this in quali-fication of patients for operation. Although the interpretation of the results of the NBT reduction tests in cases of prostatic carcinoma is difficult, the obtained results, particularly absence of granulocyte response to stimulation with the lipo-saccharide of E. coli make possible an additional determination of the function of polymorphonuclears in this malignancy. They indicate also the necessity of determination of the metabolic activity of granulocytes paralelly with other tests of clinical Immunology.
