summary

Objective. Reactive hydrocele being usually the result of testicle trauma,
inflammation or sequel to operative treatment of varicocele creates therapeutic
problem both in children and in adults. Authors present their experience with
non-operative treatment of reactive hydrocele in boys.
Material and method. The group of 36 boys, aged 14 to 18 years, with
hydrocele was analysed. In 30 patients (83.4%) hydrocele was the complication
of operative treatment of varicocele, in 3 boys was result of trauma and in 3
instances was considered idiopathic. All patients underwent treatment of
aspiration tetracycline sclerotherapy performed as an OPD procedure. Results
were evaluated in ultrasound examination.
Results. Complete regression of hydrocele was achieved in all 36 patients. In
20 cases (55%) one or two interventions were enough, while in 16 boys (46%)
procedure had to be repeated up to six times if necessary. The duration of therapy
was from 2 to 6 months (mean 3.7). Majority of patients (30/36) presented with
temporary vegetative symptoms such as weakness, nausea and abdominal pain.
Statistically significant positive correlation between hydrocele volume and
number of procedures performed in one patient was found (r = 0.45, p < 0.01).
Conclusion. Aspiration tetracycline sclerotherapy is in authors' opinion an
effective, safe and low cost method of non-operative treatment of reactive
hydrocele in boys.
