summary

Objectives. The aim of this study is the assessment of survival and prognostic factors at patients with renal cell carcinoma. All patients underwent nephrectomy at our centre during the past 10 years, in the „era of ultrasonography\".
Material and method. The study involved 371 patients (mean age 59,2 years) including 147 females (39,6%) who underwent nephrectomy between 1988 and 1997 in the Department of Urology, Pomeranian Academy of Medicine. Median follow-up time was 37,4 months. Tire Kaplan Meier method was applied to evaluate the survival curves. The level of statistical significance was calculated using log-rang test, F-Cox test and U-Mann-Whitney test.
Results. Survival rates significantly correlated with clinical stage (P=0,00001). Probability of 5-year survival rates after nephrectomy in the clinical stage I, II, III and IV were 100%, 85%, 45,5% and 9,9%, respectively. Statistically significant correlation was found between survival rates and histological clinical grading (P=0,00001). Probability of 5-year survival was 85,7% in Gl, 71,6% in G2, and 27,3% in G3. Probability of 5-year survival with tumour measuring <5 cm was 83,9%: with the tumour measuring 5-10 cm 60%; the tumor measuring > 10 cm 28%. Longer survival as in claroccllular carcinoma was found in patients with the histologic subtype of chromophobe cell carcinoma and papillary carcinoma. The shortest survival rates were found in cases of collecting duct carcinoma.
