summary

Current gold standard of treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is transurethral electroresection of the prostate (TURP), but new methods, more comfortable and safer for the patients, are still developed. One of the most promising techniques is photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) with potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser.
The authors present indications and contraindications for PVP, operative technique, perioperative management and the results of treatment. Little invasiveness and morbidity as well as relatively easy technique with good objective and subjective outcome make PVP an optimal modern method of surgical treatment of BPH, possibly new gold standard.
