summary

Introduction.

Vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) is a very common urological anomaly in children, one of the most common urological problems and probably one of the most controversial issues in pediatrics. VUR can lead to renal scarring, hypertension and end-stage renal disease.

Objectives.

There are two main goals in the management of VUR – to prevent of pyelonephritis and renal scarring (reflux nephropathy) and to allow normal renal growth.

Material and method.

Classical treatment options are the following two – medical management (antibacterial prophylaxis) and the interventional procedures (open surgery and endoscopic treatment) for cessation of reflux. Endoscopic management (STING procedure) has been added to the group of classical methods of treatment as a new concept.

Conclusions.

Authors, basing on literature and own experience (over 800 treated children), try to evaluate both forms of interventional treatment, especially considering the role and place of endoscopic treatment (STING procedure).
