kidney transplantation laparoscopy live-donor nephrectomy

summary

The kidney donation from live volunteers remains the most consistent factor which affects the long-term survival after transplantation.
The conventional, open method of donor nephrectomy is associated with significant surgical trauma and possibility of complications
mostly due to large abdominal incision. The laparoscopic live-donor nephrectomy (LDN) is the alternative for open approach. We
present first in polish medical literature case of LDN. Retroperitoneoscopic access was applied, the operation time was 210 minutes
and immediate function of transplanted kidney was observed.
We hope that this successful initial case of LDN will popularize the idea of kidney donation in Poland.
